Tips for Posting an Effective Ad on a Network, Email Group or Forum
Headlines Matter
Some really great
advertisements will never be read because the writer has labeled
them with a horrible headline.
Be descriptive. Don't use hype. Don't try to trick people.
I personally don't like it when people post things like 'Please read
this!' I mean we all want people to read our posts for heaven's
sakes so what's the point of saying that? If it's an important
announcement post, just say so in the headline.
Get a Click!
Your number one goal in
placing an ad on a network or forum should be to get the reader to
click the link in your ad!
So don't try to sell the farm in the ad itself. Tell us something
great about the item and ask for the click.
This means that you may need to utilize a special landing page just
for this ad that you've placed.
A landing page is a web page you create especially to greet new
traffic from an ad. The landing page confirms that they have found
information or resources that they desire and draws them further
towards the desired action.
The desired action may be an email address (newsletter subscriber)
or an actual sale. Whatever you want them to do, sell it on the
landing page. And just use your network ad to get the click :)
Think Things Through
Too many of the ads we see posted on networks and forums have the
flavor of a drive by shooting. For heaven's sakes slow down!
Take your time writing an advertisement.
Think of every ad posting as a Solo Ad that you are paying good
money for. That'll help you slow down and think things through more
:)
One of my personal pet peeves is reading an advertisement that says
something like "I'm making thousands every month and you can too.
That's an ad? Heck no, that's bird poo on my windshield. It means
nothing and I wish it would go away.
Take some time, write at least 100 words and make a real connection
with your readers.
Change Things Up
If you are a long time member and you've posted ads for a long time,
it is easy to get into a rut of posting the same basic ad over and
over.
Break out of that tire track and tell us something new about your
business, products or services.
Tell us a story. Share a testimonial. Give us something interesting
to read.
If you can't think of anything interesting to say about what you
have to offer - you're in big trouble period! So come out with it :)
Make Friends First
Do not and I repeat DO NOT post ads on this network if you haven't
taken the time to get to know me and the other active members of
this network.
Nobody clicks on ads from people they don't know.
It's true, check most of the ads posted on the forum from people who
aren't active. They get an average of four whole page views.
Networking is about relationships. You have to interact to develop a
relationship with me or anyone else.
Participate on the forum. Respond to other people's posts. Ask them
questions. Share resources freely. Make friends.
Friends are glad to view each other's ads - and even spend their
money with them.
